What California’s Tough New Data Protection Bill Means for Tech

California just passed the strictest data privacy bill in the U.S., with potentially major implications for large purveyors of data like Facebook (FB) and Alphabet’s Google (GOOGL).
The law, which takes effect in 2020, gives consumers more control over their personal data by giving them the right to know what information companies like Google and Facebook are collecting, why they did so, and who they’re sharing it with. Consumers will also have the option of barring companies from selling their data.
